KUSA registration papers - replace with your photo

“Does the puppy have papers?” is the most common question we hear – and the most misunderstood. Here is what KUSA registration actually is, what it guarantees, and what it does not.

What KUSA Is

The Kennel Union of Southern Africa is South Africa’s primary registry of purebred dogs and a member of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI). When a litter is KUSA-registered, each puppy’s parentage is recorded against the registered pedigrees of its sire and dam – a verifiable family tree going back generations.

What the Papers Guarantee

Registration certifies pedigree: that your puppy is the purebred offspring of the two registered dogs named on the certificate. It also means the breeder operates within KUSA’s code of ethics and that your puppy can be shown, bred (subject to conditions) and its offspring registered in turn.

What the Papers Do Not Guarantee

Papers alone do not guarantee health, temperament or quality – a registered puppy from untested parents is still a gamble. That is why registration should always come alongside health testing: hip and elbow grading, and DNA tests such as JLPP for Rottweilers and DM for German Shepherds. Ask to see both. A good breeder will show you before you ask.

Red Flags When Buying

Be cautious of “papers to follow” with no paper trail, prices dramatically below the market for “registered” puppies, breeders who will not let you meet the mother, and certificates from registries you cannot verify. A genuine breeder welcomes scrutiny.

How It Works at Guard Dog Puppies

Our breeding stock is registered with verifiable pedigrees and health-tested before mating. Your puppy’s registration paperwork goes home with the puppy, together with copies of the parents’ certificates – so you never have to take our word for anything.
